White House to Build New State Ballroom Designed by McCrery Architects

The White House State Ballroom will soon become a significant addition to the White House grounds. This new permanent event space addresses long-standing limitations in hosting large ceremonial functions.

McCrery Architects, a Washington-based firm renowned for classical design, will lead the architecture. The ballroom will feature 90,000 square feet of enclosed space and accommodate 650 guests, more than triple the capacity of the current East Room. Construction begins in September 2025 and will finish within the current administration. Clark Construction will manage the build, while AECOM will provide engineering services.

The existing East Wing, built in 1902 and expanded in 1942, will make way for the new ballroom. Although the structure will be separate, it will match the historic design of the White House. The architects aim to blend tradition with modern needs, ensuring elegance and functionality.

Architectural renderings show a neoclassical interior with a coffered ceiling, gold accents, and Corinthian columns. The upper level will include large arched windows on three sides and suspended chandeliers. A portico will adorn the building’s east façade. These elements combine to create a space both regal and welcoming.

James McCrery, principal architect, explained the project’s importance. He noted that the White House has changed little since the Truman-era reconstruction. This ballroom will not only expand capacity but also preserve the classical character Americans associate with the presidency.

Beyond size and beauty, the new ballroom meets evolving functional needs. It allows the White House to host larger state events without relying on temporary setups. It also enhances accessibility and visitor experience.

In every detail—from structure to aesthetics—the White House State Ballroom reflects a commitment to tradition and innovation. As the first major architectural addition in decades, it marks a new chapter in the history of America’s most iconic residence.
